What to Write in a Father's Day Card: Messages From a Partner, the Kids, and for a First Father's Day

22 August 2026A&J Comics 7 min read

Father's Day card messages sorted by who is writing them: from a partner, from a small child, from a grown-up child, for a first Father's Day, for a stepdad or grandad. Plus funny ones, and honest ones for when the relationship is complicated.

Father's Day cards are harder to write than they should be. Partly because a lot of dads are not naturally sentimental, so anything too soft feels like it will be met with a nod and a change of subject. And partly because "thanks for everything" covers so much that it ends up saying nothing.

Below are messages sorted by who is writing them, because a card from a three-year-old and a card from a forty-year-old are completely different jobs. There is also a section at the end for when the relationship is complicated, because for a lot of people it is.

The one rule that makes a Father's Day card work

Name a specific thing he did.

Not a quality he has, a thing he did. "You are a great dad" is a compliment. "You drove ninety minutes each way to watch me sit on the bench" is evidence.

Dads who deflect compliments cannot deflect evidence, and that is why the specific line is the one that gets him. If you are stuck, finish this sentence and you have your card: "I still think about the time you..."

Father's Day messages from a partner

These are the ones people forget to write. If he is the father of your children, a card from you lands differently to a card from them.

  • Watching you be their dad is my favourite thing about our life.
  • You are so much better at this than either of us expected. Happy Father's Day.
  • They are lucky. I knew they would be. Happy Father's Day.
  • Thank you for the 3am shifts, the terrible voices you do when you read to them, and all of it.
  • I fell for you first. Watching you with them was the second time.
  • You are the dad I hoped you would be, and a few things I did not know to hope for.

First Father's Day messages

The first one is a milestone in its own right, and worth marking properly. He has been at this for a matter of months and is probably running on very little sleep.

  • Happy first Father's Day. You have no idea what you are doing and you are doing it brilliantly.
  • One year ago this was theoretical. Now look at you.
  • Your first Father's Day, and already their favourite person to be thrown in the air by.
  • To the newest dad I know: you have been extraordinary. Get some sleep.
  • Happy first Father's Day from someone who cannot yet say it themselves.

If you want to mark the first one with something more permanent than a card, our first Father's Day personalised comic book turns their first months into a printed comic with him on the cover.

Father's Day messages from a young child

Write these in their voice, not yours. The charm is in the fact that a small person picked the detail.

  • You are the best at piggybacks. Happy Father's Day.
  • Thank you for letting me help even when I do not help.
  • You are my favourite grown-up. Do not tell Mum.
  • I love you more than dinosaurs and that is a lot.
  • Happy Father's Day to the strongest dad in the whole world and also our street.
  • You give the best cuddles and the worst haircuts.

Father's Day messages from a grown-up child

This is where the specific memory does the most work. You have decades of material.

  • I have started saying things you used to say. I have decided to take it as a good sign.
  • Thank you for the lifts, the loans, and never once making me feel like either was a favour.
  • I did not understand how much you did until I had to do some of it myself.
  • You taught me how to do almost everything I am good at. Happy Father's Day.
  • I still ring you first when something goes wrong. That says everything.
  • Everything I know about turning up for people, I learned by watching you turn up for me.
  • Thank you for being the kind of dad I did not have to grow out of needing.

Funny Father's Day messages

  • Happy Father's Day. Your jokes have not improved but my tolerance has.
  • Thanks for half my DNA and most of my worst habits.
  • You are the reason I know how to reverse a trailer and cannot fold a fitted sheet.
  • Happy Father's Day to the man who has been "just about to fix that" since 2011.
  • I am told I am becoming you. I have chosen to find this reassuring.
  • Congratulations on producing me. Easily your best work.

Father's Day messages for a stepdad

The line that lands here is almost always about choice. He did not have to.

  • You chose this. You chose us. I have never taken that lightly.
  • You did not have to show up the way you did, and you did it anyway.
  • Thank you for never once making me feel like a technicality.
  • Happy Father's Day to the man who earned the title rather than inheriting it.

Father's Day messages for a grandad

  • Watching you with them is like getting to see my own childhood from the outside.
  • You have infinite patience for them and had roughly none for me. I have made peace with this.
  • Happy Father's Day, Grandad. You are their favourite and we all know it.
  • Thank you for doing it twice.

When the relationship is complicated

Plenty of people find this weekend difficult, and a card full of warmth they do not feel is worse than a short honest one. These are true without overclaiming.

  • Thinking of you today. I hope it is a good one.
  • We have not always got this right, and I am glad we are still trying.
  • Happy Father's Day. I hope this year is a kinder one for both of us.
  • I am grateful for the good parts, and there were good parts.

And if he is grieving, or you are

  • Thinking of him today, and of you.
  • He would have loved seeing you do this.
  • I know today is heavy. I am here.

A structure for when nothing above fits

  1. The specific thing: "I still think about the time you [did the thing]."
  2. What it taught you: "It is where I got [the trait]."
  3. The plain sentence: "Thank you." or "I love you." No decoration.

When a card is not enough

The problem with a Father's Day card is that it gets read once, propped on a shelf for a fortnight, and then quietly recycled. If this is a year where you want the words to survive longer than that, put them somewhere he will pick up again.

That is what we make: you send us your photos, we draw him as the hero of his own comic book, and your words become the story. Same message, printed on something that ends up on the shelf instead of in the bin. There is a personalised comic book for dads, a version for Daddy and Me if it is about the two of them specifically, and the full range in personalised Father's Day gifts.

Whatever you write, name the specific thing. That is the line he will read twice.
