Sixty anniversary card messages sorted by year and by tone, from the first year to the twenty-fifth, plus the three rules that make any of them land. Funny, romantic, short, long distance, and the honest ones for when the year has been hard.
You bought the card. You wrote their name. And now you are sitting there with a pen, staring at a rectangle of blank space, aware that "Happy Anniversary, love you lots" is not going to cut it for the tenth year running.
This is the hardest part of any anniversary, and it has nothing to do with money. Below are sixty messages you can use, adapt, or steal outright, sorted by the year you are celebrating and by the tone you are going for. But first, three rules that make almost any anniversary message land better.
Three rules for writing an anniversary message that sounds like you
1. One specific memory beats ten general compliments
"You are the most amazing person I know" is true and forgettable. "I still think about you falling asleep on my shoulder on the 6:40 to Manchester" is not something anyone else could have written. Specificity is the entire trick. If you only take one thing from this page, take this one.
2. Say the thing you would be embarrassed to say out loud
A card is permission to be sincere in a way conversation rarely allows. The line that makes you wince slightly as you write it is almost always the line they will keep.
3. Short and honest beats long and padded
Three real sentences are worth more than a full page of filler. If you run out of true things to say, stop writing. Nobody has ever complained that an anniversary card was too short.
First anniversary messages
The first one is its own thing. You are celebrating a year, but you are really celebrating the fact that it worked.
- One year in and my favourite part of every day is still the bit where I come home to you.
- A year ago I had no idea how much of my life would end up being about you. Best surprise I have ever had.
- Twelve months, roughly four hundred arguments about what to watch, and I would do all of it again.
- Happy first anniversary to the person who made a completely ordinary year the best one I have had.
- Year one: survived. Bring on the rest of them.
The traditional first anniversary gift is paper, which is why so many people end up panic-buying a notebook. If you want the paper thing to actually mean something, our 1st anniversary personalised comic book turns your first year into an actual printed comic, with the two of you drawn onto the cover. The card writes itself once the gift has done the heavy lifting.
Second anniversary messages
- Two years and you still laugh at my worst jokes. That is commitment.
- Everyone said the second year was harder. They were wrong, or we are just very good at this.
- Two years of you is not nearly enough. I am putting in a request for considerably more.
- Happy anniversary to the only person I would willingly share a bathroom with.
- Year two, and I have stopped being surprised that I got this lucky. I have not stopped being grateful.
Cotton is the traditional second-year gift, which is a gift for people who like a challenge. There are more ideas in our cotton anniversary gifts collection if you want something that is not a tea towel.
Third, fourth and fifth anniversary messages
- Three years, one flat, zero regrets.
- Three years in and you are still the person I want to tell things to first.
- Four years. We have a routine now, and honestly, it is my favourite thing about my life.
- Four years of you making the boring parts good.
- Five years. Half a decade. A genuinely alarming amount of shared history and I want all of it.
- Five years ago I got very lucky and I have been quietly congratulating myself ever since.
- Happy fifth. Still the best decision I have made without thinking it through.
Ten, twenty and twenty-five year anniversary messages
The long ones are harder, because everything obvious has already been said. Go for the thing that has changed, or the thing that has not.
- Ten years. Two of the people we were when we started would not recognise us, and I like these two better.
- A decade of you. I would like to formally request another one.
- Ten years and I still check the room for you when I walk in.
- Twenty years. Most of my life now has you in it, and that is exactly how I wanted it to go.
- Twenty years of building something that does not look like anyone else's. I am so proud of it.
- Twenty-five years. A quarter of a century. Still the funniest person I know.
- Twenty-five years ago I promised you a lot of things. I have kept most of them, and I am still working on the rest.
Funny anniversary messages
Humour works best when there is a real sentiment underneath it. Land the joke, then land the truth.
- Happy anniversary. Statistically, you could have done better. I am delighted you did not.
- Another year of me. You are extremely brave and I love you.
- I would say you complete me but you also lost my car keys twice this year, so let us say you mostly complete me.
- Congratulations to us on another year of pretending we know what we are doing.
- Happy anniversary to my favourite person to be mildly annoyed by.
- I still love you, which is frankly impressive given how you load a dishwasher.
- Marriage is just arguing about the thermostat with someone you would die for. Happy anniversary.
Romantic anniversary messages
- I did not know it was possible to keep falling for the same person. Apparently it is.
- Everything good in my life traces back to the day I met you.
- You are my favourite thing that has ever happened to me, and I include being born.
- I would choose this. Every version of my life, every time, I would choose this.
- Thank you for a year of being the person I come home to.
- I love the life we have made. I love that we made it on purpose.
- You are the best story I have.
Short anniversary messages
For small cards, gift tags, or when you genuinely have nothing left in the tank.
- Still you. Still me. Still glad.
- Happy anniversary. I would pick you again.
- Another year, same favourite person.
- Thank you for all of it.
- My favourite person, my favourite year.
- Here is to us.
- You, always.
Long distance anniversary messages
- Counting down to the bit where I do not have to write this in a card.
- Same moon, worse time zone. Happy anniversary.
- A year of bad wifi and good conversations. Worth every second.
- The distance is temporary. This is not.
- I miss you in a way that would be embarrassing if it were not so consistent.
Anniversary messages for a husband or a wife
- Marrying you is still the smartest thing I have ever done and I have a degree.
- I did not know what I was signing up for. It turned out to be the best thing available.
- Happy anniversary to my husband, my favourite person, and the only man who can make me laugh mid-argument.
- To my wife: thank you for building this with me. Thank you for all of it.
- Every year I understand the vows a bit better. Every year I mean them more.
What to write when things have been hard
Not every anniversary lands in a good year. Pretending otherwise makes a card feel hollow. These are honest without being heavy.
- This year was not our easiest. I am glad we did it together.
- Thank you for staying in it with me.
- We got through it. That is worth more to me than an easy year would have been.
- I know it has been a lot. I am still exactly where I want to be.
- Here is to a gentler year. I love you.
Still stuck? Use this structure
If nothing above fits, fill in these four lines and you will have a better card than most people manage:
- The year: "Happy [nth] anniversary."
- A specific memory: "I keep thinking about [the exact thing]."
- The thing you would not say out loud: "[Say it.]"
- The forward look: "Here is to [the next thing you are doing together]."
When the words deserve more than a card
Everything on this page has the same problem: a card gets read once and then lives in a drawer. If this is a year that deserves more than that, the words can go somewhere they will actually get looked at again.
That is the whole idea behind what we make. You upload your photos, we draw the two of you as comic characters, and your words become the story on the page. It is the same message you were going to write, printed on something that stays on the shelf. Have a look at our personalised anniversary gifts, or if you are shopping for him specifically, the anniversary comic book for him.
Whatever you write, write the specific thing. That is the part they keep.
